There were 266 drowning deaths in Australian waterways between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014. This is a reduction of 10% compared to the number of drowning deaths in 2012/13.
Swimming pools accounted for 15 per cent of drowning deaths in 2013/14. 8 per cent of drowning deaths occurred in children aged 0-4 years and 4 per cent occurred in children aged 5-14 years. These statistics highlight the need for a secure pool/spa fence that complies with the BCA codes.
